Monitoring

The donor site on the River Ouse at Sharpsbridge was inspected periodically to monitor the seasonal growth of plants there and see if there were any adverse effects from removing plants.

21st Aug 2000 - no adverse effects were apparent. One could not tell that any plant material had been removed.

7th July 2001 - On 7th July 2001, a small work party attended the site to remove some sheep netting that had become entangled in the river bed. At the same time the donor site was inspected and it was noted with some surprise that the whole of the Ranunculus bed had been denuded by the winter spates and not a shred of vegetation remained. Consideration was given to attempt a replanting of the site, but the substrate and flow pattern had altered to such an extent that this was not deemed feasible. The patch of Sparganium emersum upstream of the bridge had not suffered any damage and appeared to be more dense and extensive than before.
