Aquatic Planting Project

Conclusions

August 2000

At this stage of the experiment it seems that the conditions in Plumpton Mill Stream are more favourable for the growth of Ranunculus fluitans than in the Bevern. The sites were evidently unsuitable for the establishment of starwort (Callitriche) but a further attempt to introduce this species at different sites may be worthwhile at a later date. Once rooted, the Sparganium seems to thrive at any location.

May 2001

It seems safe to conclude that Ranunculus fluitans is now successfully established at these sites in the Bevern Stream. The remnants of the Sparganium emersum surviving at sites 2 and 4 may develop a more robust root system during the summer growth period and improve their viability. Attention will now turn to the introduction of further appropriate species in the near future.
