This sample was taken a short distance downstream from where we perform chemical tests each month on the quality of the water. We intend to carry out biological tests at this site on a regular basis to monitor the long term effects that water quality has on invertebrate life in the stream.

February 2010

A slightly better result than October 2008, but apart from shrimps and midge larvae abundance was low. Many of the shrimps were parasitized by the spiny headed worm Echinorrhyncus polymorphus.

October 2008

This stream runs through the centre of Haywards Heath, where it is apparent that some people use it as a convenient rubbish tip. The in stream debris, lack of vegetation and ubiquitous rust coloured sediment gave the impression of a sterile environment. We were therefore surprised at this result, which although not good, was better than expected.

Location Scrase Stream – B2111 road bridge, Cuckfield
Date 14th October 2008
Grid Reference TQ 350249
Notes

Riffle\glide over gravel substrate covered with a thin layer of rust coloured sediment, which was easily washed away during the kick sampling. Also contained bricks scrap metal and other man made debris. Moderate flow, light shading

Also netted in this sample.

1 Bullhead, Dipteran larvae, 1 empty Planorbis shell, water mites.
