Bevern Stream, downstream from Clapper's Bridge, Barcombe

This sample was taken 1/2 km downstream from where we perform chemical tests each month on the quality of the water. This is the nearest place downstream from Clapper's Bridge with suitable depth and flow of water for carrying out a kick sample. We intend to carry out biological tests at this site on a regular basis to monitor the long term effects that water quality has on invertebrate life in the stream.

November 2007

A BMWP Score of 61 is rated as fair biological quality and the ASPT also as fair. This is an almost identical result to the test taken in October 07 and probably reflects the results of the recent spillage of sewage but it should be noted that biodiversity is reduced by the dominance of strong competitors like the hydropsychid net-spinning caddis larvae.

April 2006

A fairly wide variety of organisms were captured, but lacking in pollution sensitive families, giving low scores on both the BMWP total and the Average Score Per Taxon. This maybe related to recent high levels of ammonia measured at this location.
